Artist-in-Residency Program Overview

Locally owned and operated, the Atticus Hotel is a celebration of our community’s history and culture, shared with guests through storytelling, art, architecture, and locally sourced and crafted products. We have deep roots in the local arts community, and feature original, local work throughout the property, including three special installations created through a facilitated community art project.

The Atticus Hotel Artist in Residency program (AH/AIR) is the next chapter in that story — expanding our support for the arts beyond facilitation and acquisition into direct support for artists actively creating new work.

Developed in partnership with the Linfield University Creative Writing Department, the AH/AIR program gives college students the opportunity to review and score submissions, then invite selected writers into the classroom during their residency for an integrative experience — readings, workshops, and Q&A sessions among the options.

Focused on the written word, the AH/AIR program offers residencies to writers seeking focused time in an inspiring environment, and a chance to become part of the family of people who bring the Atticus Hotel’s vision to life every day.

To help residents connect with our hotel family and the Linfield community, AH/AIR participants are asked to contribute a piece of their artistic life during their stay. That contribution might take the form of a previously published work donated to the AH/AIR library, a reading at a local library or bookshop, or a writing workshop designed to foster connection.

Residency Types

One of the core goals of the AH/AIR program is to meet writers where they are — both creatively and logistically. Residency lengths vary to give our resident artists flexibility, in recognition that the needs of a life and the needs of a creative project don’t always look the same.

The AH/AIR program offers three residency formats:

  • An intensive four-day stay
  • A longer, one-week residency
  • An extended two-week residency

Residencies run from November 15 through April 1 and may overlap with other residents or run individually, depending on availability.

Artists in Residence receive a room at the Atticus Hotel for the full length of their stay, along with all the usual perks: complimentary espresso around the clock, use of our Dutch-style bikes, the option to work from our hidden Drawing Room or Board Room, and every other guest amenity we offer. Each resident also receives a daily meal credit at Cypress, our on-site, Mediterranean-inspired restaurant.

Residencies are single occupancy, though a guest may join for the final night or two of your stay. Pets are welcome, subject to standard hotel policy.
