Think we’ve hit peak hotel? Nope. We’re not even close.
If it seems like Portland gets a new luxury hotel practically every month, well, you’re not wrong. Last winter, we reported on 11 Portland-area hospitality projects slated to open within the next six months. Eight months later, nine are taking reservations, with another three big-name projects are nipping at their heels. (That’s not even counting a tight knot of newly announced West End hotel projects: a 33-story, 5-star luxury tower planned for the block of SW 9th and Washington; the 11-story Moxy Hotel, to be developed just across 10th; and a third already under construction at the razed site of the former United Way offices at SW 11th and Alder.)
Surely, we’ve hit peak hotel, right? Not so fast. The latest stats from Travel Portland show that while the number of available hotel rooms in central Portland continued to rise over 2017, occupancy rates held at around 80 percent.
Yes, more tourists means you’ll likely be directing ever more people in the direction of Voodoo Doughnut. And yes, the lines at your favorite sandwich shop will continue to get longer with each rerun of the Food Network show that discovered ityears after you claimed it. But consider the big picture. If strong occupancy rates hold into 2019, that’s great news for beneficiaries of the state’s visitor lodging tax: public safety agencies, infrastructure projects, and even emergency services. Also happy about that? Area restaurants, wineries, and retailers—sectors, among others, that benefited from the $5.1 billon in direct tourism spending that flowed into the Portland metro area in 2017.
One thing to watch as PDX gets hotter: solid competition for those tourist dollars from new destinations elsewhere—like Bay Point Landing in Coos Bay, Loge Entrada in Bend, and the Society Hotel’s planned satellite location in Bingen, Washington.
